Future New York Big Three
Imagine a New York Knick team made up of Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, and current acquisition Amar’e Stoudemire all in Madison Square Garden. This dream may become a reality come 2011.
Reportedly at Carmelo’s wedding reception saturday night Chris Paul got up, grabbed the mic and allegedly toasted to forming a future New York big three. I hope he was sober because he’s sending shivers through the NBA at the thought of this.
The big three model seems to be the blue print these days to win a championship. The Spurs utilized Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. The Celtics with Kevin Garnett, Paul Peirce, and Ray Allen, and now the Miami Heats Three Kings.
Melo will be a free agent come next summer and if he does not accept a looming contract extension from Denver then I can see NYC in his future. The Nuggets have already made it very clear they will not trade their superstar.
Chris Paul’s contract is up in 2012 but the Knicks could continue acquiring players such as Raymond Felton to use as leverage in a possible trade next season when they become eligible .
If the stars align and the likes of CP3, Melo, and Stoudemire do join forces to form a third “big three” then we will see the old Knicks vs. Heat rivalry renewed. Now that idea is exciting to me. I grew up a huge fan of the Knicks and the memorable playoff matchups these two teams took part in during the 90′s were rough, tough, and old fashioned basketball.
Granted these guys are all friends but when on the court they are competitors and you know they want to walk off the court as winners.
You take the newly united group in Miami of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh, then place them in a eastern conference battle with the future Knicks team above your looking at some amazing games.
After the disappointment of failing to land a major free agent other than Amar’e this is giving New York fans something to drool over and look forward to.
Most of these rumors tend to be nothing more than hot air, but I can actually see this one panning out. Melo is somewhat ignored in Denver since he’s not located in a major media outlet and would jump at the opportunity to increase his super stardom. He was also born in Brooklyn and played one year at Syracuse University and many games at MSG. Chris Paul is obviously on a New Orleans team that will not be in championship contention anytime soon and a move to New York would be a refreshing change and a chance to win. New Orleans would also like to get something in return for Paul since he’ll likely leave anyways once his contract does expire.
Yes this rumor came from a Wedding reception, but it came from CP3 himself. I hope theres some legitimacy to these reports as it can only serve the NBA well to have a great team back in New York.
